Book Review: “Dream of Ding Village,” a China AIDS Nightmare

Chinese Books, English Reviews Add comments

Yan Lianke (阎连科) wrote Dream of Ding Village (丁庄之梦), a nightmarish novel recounting how morally dysfunctional blood merchants spread AIDS in his native province of Henan.

This is the same author who penned the wicked Serve the People that, perhaps due to the scene where Mao’s statue is smashed to ensure copulation can continue, is still very much banned in the People’s Republic.

Read Sebastian Veg’s review of the French translation (the review’s in English, mind you), or a short excerpt from the English-translation-in-progress by Cindy Carter.
